A green circle around someone's Instagram story means it was shared only with their Close Friends — and you're on the list. Here's how it works.
A normal Instagram story has a pink-to-orange ring around the profile picture. When the ring is green, something different is going on: that story was shared with a smaller, hand-picked audience.
What the green circle means
The green ring means the story was posted to the person’s Close Friends list instead of to all their followers. If you can see a green ring, you’re on their Close Friends list. People who aren’t on it don’t see that story at all.
When you open the story, you’ll also see a small green star badge near the top — another sign it’s Close Friends-only.
How Close Friends works

How to post a green-circle story
- Make your story as usual.
- Instead of Your story, tap Close Friends (the green star icon) at the bottom.
- Choose who’s on the list the first time, then share.
You can edit the list anytime from your profile menu under Close Friends.

These get mixed up a lot:

- Small green dot on a profile picture = that person is active right now.
