Snapchat Planets Explained: Order, Meaning, and How It Works

What each Snapchat Planet means, the full order from Mercury (#1) to Neptune (#8), how Friend Solar System works and why you might not see it.

Snapchat Planets Explained: Order, Meaning, and How It Works
Quick answerSnapchat Planets (officially Friend Solar System) is a Snapchat+ feature. You are the Sun, and the planet you see on a friend's profile shows where you rank among their top 8 friends: Mercury is #1, Neptune is #8.

“Snapchat Planets” is the nickname for Friend Solar System, a Snapchat+ feature that shows how close you are with a friend. You are the Sun. If you’re in someone’s top 8 friends, their profile shows you a planet, and that planet tells you your rank.

The Snapchat planet order

The planets follow the real solar system, from closest to the Sun to farthest away:

Planet Your rank in their friends
Mercury #1 — you’re their closest friend
Venus #2
Earth #3
Mars #4
Jupiter #5
Saturn #6
Uranus #7
Neptune #8

So Mercury is the best planet to be, and Neptune means you only just made their top 8.

How the ranking works

Snapchat ranks friends by how often you snap and chat with each other. The ranking isn’t fixed — it moves as your habits change. If your friend starts snapping someone else every day, you can slide from Earth to Mars without either of you doing anything on purpose.

How to see your planet

  1. Open a chat with a friend and tap their name to open their profile.
  2. Look for the Best Friends badge with a gold ring.
  3. Tap it to see their solar system and your planet.

If there is no badge, you aren’t in their top 8 right now — or one of the reasons below applies.

Why you can’t see Snapchat Planets

  • You don’t have Snapchat+. Friend Solar System is a subscriber feature.
  • It’s switched off. It’s optional, and Snapchat has changed whether it’s on by default for new subscribers.
  • You’re not in their top 8. No rank, no planet.
  • Snapchat changed its defaults. The feature has been adjusted more than once, so behavior can differ between app versions.

Is it a public ranking?

No. Nobody else can see where you rank, and the feature only shows your place in their list. Think of it as a private hint, not a leaderboard — and since it tracks activity, not feelings, don’t read too much into a bad week on Neptune.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Snapchat planet order?

Mercury (#1), Venus (#2), Earth (#3), Mars (#4), Jupiter (#5), Saturn (#6), Uranus (#7) and Neptune (#8) — the same order as the real solar system, from closest to the Sun to farthest.

Do you need Snapchat+ to see Planets?

Yes. Friend Solar System is part of Snapchat+, and you need the feature turned on to see it.

Can the other person see what planet they are to me?

The planet shows your position in their top friends, not theirs in yours. It is not a public ranking — it's only visible inside the Best Friends badge on a profile.

Why did my planet change?

Rankings follow how much you snap and chat with each other, so they shift when either of you talks to other people more or less.
